Steven came back from the brink of death. But you have the power to help him do more than survive. His twin brother John tells the story of Steven’s inspirational fight to speak again:
Saying goodbye to my twin brother Steven was one of the most painful experiences of my life.
In 2016 a normal day for my brother would start the same as yours. The alarm goes off; you get out of bed and head for the bathroom. That’s when Steven collapsed. Suffering a massive stroke.
I went to the hospital and we were told the heartbreaking news. Steven wouldn’t see the weekend. As we sat by the hospital bed the doctor told us to say our goodbyes.
It was a total shock. You never expect something like this to happen to you.
Steven isn’t just my twin brother, he feels like a part of me. He’s been my best friend from the moment I was born.
I spent that weekend grieving for the loss of my best friend.
Every day I took a deep breath and went back to the hospital preparing for the worst.
As you can imagine, I was a nervous wreck.
But just days later, I walked in to find Steven, sat up in bed, shaving his beard.
That image will stay with me forever. My amazing brother, sat doing something so normal, just days after we were told he wouldn’t survive the night.
Steven’s got an underlying strength unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Whatever life throws at him, he’s ready for the fight.
My brother survived and our family is so thankful for that.
My fit, confident brother was left struggling to put one foot in front of the other. He lost the ability to talk. He felt trapped, frustrated and alone.
Then just months after the stroke, we suffered the devastating loss of our precious Dad.
It has been an incredibly tough time, but thanks to you we are not alone.
Claire from Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland has been by our side every step of the way.
But nearly three years on Steven still needs so much help with his speech. With your support Claire can keep visiting each week and help my brother speak again.
My defiant brother came back from the brink of death. But you have the power to help him do more than survive.
His ongoing fight to recover, and that of survivors across Scotland, depends on people like you.
Please give what you can and help families like ours get their lives back.
“It’s been an incredibly tough time, but thanks to you we are not alone”
With sincere thanks,
