Heart Beat, an evening of music and comedy in support of Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland

“It gives us great pleasure to be here tonight”. Rarely will those words create greater relevance and resonance than those announced by the performers of the event that’s raising awareness and funds at legendary Glasgow venue The Clutha on Sunday 23 April 2023 at 7pm.

The show features seasoned, circuit favourites The Tufty Club, The Braw Tones, The Memories and UK and Internationally acclaimed comedy festival regular compere Scott Agnew. The all-Glasgow line-up features performers who have had the experience of cardiac arrest or heart attack, something that sets this unique night apart from the usual benefit gigs. These are guys that have been there, lived through it and come out the other side. And, in a public display of solidarity for their life saving medics, they’re supporting the support – Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland.

We are incredibly grateful to all the performers who themselves have experienced heart conditions and have chosen to give back by raising funds for Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland.

Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland is Scotland’s largest health charity, helping people living with the effects of chest and heart conditions, Long Covid, and stroke live life to the full.

Louise MacLeod, Community, Events and Corporate Fundraiser said: “We are incredibly grateful to all the performers who themselves have experienced heart conditions and have chosen to give back by raising funds for Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland.

“Support from fundraising allows us to support the one in five people across Scotland who suffer from chest, heart and stroke conditions. We can’t thank them enough!”

Everyone involved; the venue, organisers, performers and engineers are donating their equipment. time and talents to optimise the evening’s revenue.

frankly none of us know the place or the time a heart attack may strike. I was keen to try and give a wee something back so someone in my situation gets the same chance

Scott explains his involvement “I’m delighted and excited to be involved with this event raising money for CHSS, because frankly none of us know the place or the time a heart attack may strike. Having been given a second chance at life from the EMT at the Royal, the Scottish Ambulance Service and the coronary care team at the Jubilee I was keen to try and give a wee something back so someone in my situation gets the same chance.”

Front man of The Tufty Club, Dougie McLellan “Following my Cardiac Arrest last year, I received great care from medical professionals and volunteers at the Foodies Festival. I probably wouldn’t be here now had it not been for the support on hand and the mobile defibrillators that were on site. It’s really important that we have defibrillators available for the community 24/7 to prevent what are avoidable deaths in the future”.

“Having worked with The Tufty Club and Scott before at Citizen fest and stage managing the event at which Dougie had his cardiac arrest, I have a strong connection with the boys and the idea practically suggested itself. We’re bowled over, but not surprised at the generosity of our partners, particularly with our raffle prizes” enthused organiser Clive Leighton of Public-i Music Events and Media.

Those prizes feature a Celtic FC first team signed ball, a Parkhead Stadium tour for 4, a Rangers FC first team signed shirt, a Scotland Football shirt signed by captain Andy Robertson, a signed Ross Muir print and 2 pairs of tickets for Foodies Festival.

Attendees can donate whatever they feel at the door or book in advance via Eventbrite.

So why not get yourself down to The Clutha and show that Glasgow is the big-hearted city that we’ve known it always has been.

Heart Beat takes place from 7pm on Sun 23 April 2023 at The Clutha Bar, 167-169 Stockwell Street, Glasgow G1 4SP
