Charity Launches Summer Health Walks at Glasgow Nature Reserve 24 May 2023 Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland launches health walks at Hamiltonhill Claypits Local Nature Reserve. Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland is launching a series of summer walks around the Hamiltonhill Claypits Nature Reserve to promote walking for health. The Claypits is a nature reserve with wooded walks and paths running alongside the Forth and Clyde Canal, between the Firhill and Applecross basins. It was once an industrial hub linked to the canal and Glasgow’s history. The first walk will take place on Friday 26th of May, in the last week of National Walking Month. Subsequent walks will take place on the last Friday of June, July and August. The walks are free and open to all members of the public. They are at a gentle pace and led by trained walk leaders from Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland and the Hamiltonhill Claypits Nature Reserve, both members of the Scottish Health Walk Network. The walks are estimated to last around an hour with tea and coffee provided at the end. Those interested should meet at the Applecross entrance to the nature reserve at 11am (1 Applecross Street, Glasgow G4 9SP.) Walking is such a great way to improve our health and it’s also a free and accessible way to exercise. It is particularly good for those who are looking for a gentle way to exercise following a stroke or heart attack. There will also be an opportunity for those attending to learn more about Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland’s Health Defence Project in Maryhill where members of the public can book in for a free health check including blood pressure and cholesterol level tests. Walks are free with tea and coffee provided at the end, gentle paced, and led by trained walk leaders from CHSS and Claypits, both members of the Scottish Health Walk Network. Jacqueline Kent, Walking for Health Coordinator at Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland said: “We are really excited to offer this series of summer walks at the beautiful Hamiltonhill Nature Reserve. “Walking is such a great way to improve our health and it’s also a free and accessible way to exercise. It is particularly good for those who are looking for a gentle way to exercise following a stroke or heart attack. “We look forward to welcoming as many people as possible along to our series of walks, benefiting our physical and mental health by getting out and about in nature. Bob Alston, Walk Leader and member of the Hamiltonhill Claypits LNR Management Group commented: “We are proud to work with Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland on the health walks within our community on the Claypits. “We hope that people join in, not only in a walk that makes you feel good, but being in and around nature in beautiful greenspace.” For more information, contact walking@chss.org.uk
