Health Checks

Join us for a free health check to help you find out more about your overall health and get advice about how to live a healthier life.

Our friendly, trained team will ask you some simple questions about your health – for example, ‘Do you smoke or vape? How many units of alcohol do you drink in a week?’ – which will help us find out more about what’s important to you. You can also choose to have free tests to find out more about your health, including checking your blood pressure, weight, waist measurement and cholesterol level.

At the end of the health check we will help you set one goal which you’d like to work on to improve your health. Together we will also create a simple plan that fits your needs to increase your chances of achieving it.

A health check usually takes around 20-45 minutes, and you are welcome to bring a friend, relative or support worker with you to help you feel relaxed and comfortable.

You can drop in whenever suits you for a health check, or book an appointment with us in advance.

Our Stories

“It’s been really helpful and it’s good to meet other people in the same situation.”

Just ask Robert

Staying fit and active has been Robert’s goal since he suffered a heart attack and stroke almost five years.

The 70-year-old, who lives in Glasgow, had to undergo a triple heart bypass, then spent almost four months in hospital.

Left with mobility issues on his left leg, Robert joined the gym at the city’s Kelvin Hall to recover his fitness. Then, one of the gym instructors told him about our physical activity sessions at the Maryhill Hub.

The sessions, part of our Movement Matters Programme, are there to support people to get active. Designed for people who have a chest, heart, stroke or Long Covid condition, the sessions range in intensity from chair to circuit-based activity.

Robert says:

“My left leg has given me problems since the stroke, so I was going to the gym to keep mobile because I didn’t want to seize up. I do a bit of cycling and rowing on the gym equipment.

“I had no idea the hub was even there until one of the girls at the Kelvin Hall suggested it to me. Now I’m going to the hub on a Tuesday and doing an extension of what I’ve been doing at the gym.

It’s been really helpful and it’s good to meet other people in the same situation.

“I was four months in Gartnavel Hospital. It was a long slog. I knew I had to keep active, so that’s why I went to the Kelvin Hall. I’m never going to run a marathon, but I’m still able to move and CHSS are helping me stay that way.”

William’s love of walking kept him going

William used to love going for a walk with his beloved dog, Archie. But when he suffered a stroke, William was worried he’d no longer be able to go on his daily walk.

But slowly, William began to recuperate and started walking short distances around his neighbourhood.

He spotted a notice at the local health centre and was soon part of the Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland health walking group in Drumchapel.

“The best thing that a walk does is help your mental health because just being out and active makes you feel good,” says William.

“The walking group is great company because we’re all going through the same thing.”
